Accommodation in Germany for International Students
Dorms, WG, and Private Apartments

For many students, admission feels like the hard part. Then Germany teaches them the truth: sometimes finding the right place to live is the real challenge. Housing is one of the first things that turns a study plan from theory into reality. It affects your monthly budget, your daily routine, your social life, and even how quickly you settle into the country. Germany’s official study guidance makes one thing very clear: student housing exists, but it rewards speed, planning, and realism rather than late decisions. DAAD’s accommodation guidance says rooms in student residences run by student services cost about €280 per month on average, and it stresses that these rooms are very popular, so students should apply early. Another DAAD housing page describes many residence halls as publicly funded and among the cheapest options, putting the average at around €250 per month.

That immediately explains why dormitories are so attractive. They are not always the most luxurious option, but they are often the most efficient one. They usually give students a lower monthly cost, a more straightforward start, and a built-in connection to student life. At the same time, they are limited in availability. Official study-in-Germany guidance says students usually need to apply through the local Studierendenwerk or student union for a place in a dorm, and application criteria can vary by city. In other words, a student residence is not something you “look at later.” In Germany, good housing decisions often begin before the visa is even finalized.

Then there is the famous WG, or shared flat. For many international students, this becomes the middle path between affordability and freedom. A WG often gives you more independence than a dorm and a lower cost than renting alone. Even when students do not know the term before arriving, they quickly discover that shared housing is one of the most practical ways to survive large university cities without pushing the budget too far. The reason this matters is clear in DAAD’s cost guide: the average rent including utility costs for students in Germany is about €410 per month, while food averages €198 and health-related costs about €100. Once you see those numbers together, housing stops being a side issue and becomes the center of your budget.

Private apartments offer the most independence, but they also demand the most from a student’s budget and organization. They can make sense for students who want privacy, are moving with family, or cannot secure dorm or shared-flat housing. But they are usually not the best first option for a new international student who is still learning the city, the bureaucracy, and the real cost of daily life. Germany is manageable when you keep flexibility. It becomes harder when you lock yourself too early into the most expensive format.

There is also an administrative detail many students overlook: once you have found a place to live, Germany expects you to act on it officially. DAAD’s residence guidance states that everyone who moves into accommodation in Germany must register or update their registration with the local Residents’ Registration Office. Housing in Germany is therefore not only about where you sleep. It is directly connected to your legal setup after arrival.

The smartest accommodation strategy in Germany in 2026 is simple. Start early. Treat dorms as the most budget-friendly option, shared flats as the practical compromise, and private apartments as the premium choice that should be taken only with clear eyes. Students who plan housing early often feel calmer, spend less, and settle faster. Students who delay it usually end up paying more for less comfort. In Germany, where the academic path can be very rewarding, housing is one of the first decisions that separates a smooth start from a stressful one.
